“How Many Ways Can You Make…?” is a collection of open-ended mathematics challenges that encourages children to explore numbers, experiment with different strategies, and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical relationships.
Rather than asking pupils to solve one question with one correct method, these challenges invite them to find as many different ways as possible to make a target number. For example, if the target is 345, students might use place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or combinations of operations to reach the answer.
The emphasis is not simply on finding the correct answer. It is on exploring possibilities, explaining reasoning, making connections and developing confidence as mathematical thinkers.
These activities are particularly useful in Grades 3 and 4 because students are developing fluency with larger numbers and the four operations, while beginning to recognise how mathematical ideas connect.
Think Dive is built on a simple idea: a handful of curiosity + a bucket of imagination = learning that sticks. Every resource is designed to spark original thinking in young minds.
