Wildfires Around the World | Biomimicry Posters & STEAM Design Challenges

How does a plant "choose" to be burned? Wildfires Around the World takes students on a journey across five continents, from Australian bushfires to Siberian boreal fires, to uncover how plants and animals have turned one of nature's fiercest forces into a survival strategy.

Through this resource, students discover that fire affects ecosystems in wildly different ways depending on where in the world you look. They explore how Australian banksia seeds only release once cracked open by heat, how South African protea cones wait for scorching before they open, and how Siberian jack pines seal their seeds in resin that melts only in a blaze, while echidnas, wombats, bears and geometric tortoises each show a different survival strategy, from hiding underground to fleeing outright.

In California, giant sequoia bark shrugs off heat that would destroy other trees, and California poppy seeds wait dormant until triggered by smoke chemicals. The Amazon offers a striking contrast, as a region with no natural fire defences at all, prompting students to think critically about why some ecosystems evolved to survive fire, and others didn't.

Three thinking-challenge pages push this further, and six STEAM design-challenge cards ask students to become inventors themselves, translating nature's fire-survival strategies, such as heat-triggered seed vaults, insulating bark, and low-power survival modes, into original human designs.

Inside this resource, you'll find five region-based information posters covering Australia, South Africa, Siberia, California and the Amazon, three thinking challenge pages to deepen discussion, and six biomimicry STEAM design challenge cards that turn every adaptation into a hands-on invention prompt.

Perfect for a biomimicry or ecosystems unit, a STEAM design thinking challenge, or a critical thinking extension for students fascinated by how nature solves impossible problems.

Think Dive is built on a simple idea: a handful of curiosity + a bucket of imagination = learning that sticks. Every resource is designed to spark original thinking in young minds.
