Very easy to use - just send your students to the website and let them work! Students can play individually or in teams. UPDATED FOR 2026 - new version has been updated.
Mardi Gras is here! Your friend has sent you some beads, but you can't open the box they're in without figuring out the codes to the locks. Learn about Mardi Gras and open the box to get your prize in this Mardi Gras digital escape game. This is a challenging activity that students will need to work together and think critically in order to complete. All readings are in English
Digital escape games are a fun way to start a unit, or to review at the end of a unit. They can also be used to learn about a cultural or historical event. This game will have your students reading carefully and paying attention to the smallest details in order to complete the challenge and unlock the locks.
This item includes:
Your students will enjoy learning without even realizing that they are learning! The challenging game format will get them excited about finding the code to unlock each lock - and the format of the clues for each lock will have them paying close attention - there's no way to solve the puzzles without being 100% focused!
Topics in this game include:
Prep is very easy - you just need to share the website URL with your students. You may want to test the site before you use it, just to make sure nothing is blocked by your district. As some of the clues can be challenging to unlock, you may choose to help your students with the trickier ones. With the teacher guide, you will have the answer key - so you can help guide students towards the correct answer by giving them hints, or if you have limited time, you can adjust the game by reducing the number of locks they need to unlock - just give them the answer(s) to help the activity fit your time constraints.

This was a fun activity to complete with my students. The questions stumped my students at times, however they were able to complete the escape room with minimal help from me.

I tested the Breakout room the weekend before using it in class, and I corresponded with the author of this resource with some questions. She was responsive to my emails. However, I still had a number of technical problems with the sites on the day that I used this in class. Plus, the escape room was much too difficult for my 7th and 8th grade students. They had never done one before and were confused, and it was hard to manage. This is probably best for high school students. Honestly though, if I didn't have the answer key, I'm not sure I would have ever figured it out either. There are many positive reviews here though, so perhaps this is just me!

This was a fun escape room for students! It was rather difficult for my 8th graders, so I had to give them multiple hints. I learned a lot and so did they!

This activity was left for a substitute. A few of my students had trouble with the spreadsheet link. Others just weren't persistent enough to figure out what had to be done to complete the activity.

Students enjoyed learning about Mardi Gras and the escape game got them thinking. Now if only my school would stop blocking sites...-_- Merci beaucoup!

This is a wonderful resource and great for a sub activity. I'm wondering how to get around students being able to "inspect" the form though.

Fun cultural activity for a holiday. Not one of my students was able to complete all 5 locks in class (I gave about 30 minutes) as we had other things going on too. But they loved the challenge and were very engaged.

My class had a lot of fun with this! Most finished in a 40 minute period. It's a good resource to use as a review of Mardi Gras vocabulary and activities.

Great escape room! Most of my kids liked it and had fun learning about Mardi Gras. Some had trouble, but with a little help they were able to figure it out. My only issue is that one of my students "inspected" the Google Form and found the answers. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? One of my colleagues suggested making the Form into a Quiz, but I'm not sure how that would work.

I love using this resource for sub days, activities after students finish independent work or even for the whole lesson. Students love the puzzles. It does take a little time for students to get used to the format and what to look for but they figure it out.

hELLO tHE MARDI Gras digital escape room is reallly fun. I was disappointed though because there was an error to the date
Reply from Frenchified
When did you download the PDF file? The date is updated each year and the current pdf appears to match what is in the form - it's possible that TPT is still downloading an older PDF file. The most recent update was done yesterday to fix a broken link.

My students used this after a brain blast of what they already knew about Mardi Gras and a short lesson on top 10 things you should know about Mardi Gras last year. I plan to do the same thing this year with a Yardigras addition due to Covid. When I tried the links this year, one was not working. It’s the one that goes with the Cajuns, when you make a copy of the spreadsheet, first answer is Longfellow, which then gives you a website, but the website doesn’t load. So then you can’t get any of the other answers. When I message about links that aren't working Frenchified is very prompt in updating and responding. If you are pressed for time I recommend setting a timer and sharing a hint every so many minutes so the students don't get too frustrated as these are challenging for Middle School students.

This was the first digital escape game my students had ever completed and THEY LOVED IT! Most found it very challenging and were so proud when they unlocked it at the end. I am totally sold on this as an activity and will now go and get all of your other games! Thank you for sharing your creativity with everyone!

My students were engaged but it was SO HARD! Even I had trouble finding some of the clues. Also there is a broken link. Good idea and could be fixed, but I would not recommend this purchase.
Reply from Frenchified
Which link is broken? They were working as of a couple of days ago when I last checked them, but sometimes the links or content does get moved and I can easily change the link to something that does work. If you ever run into trouble while playing the game, a quick email to me and I can usually fix the issue (unless, of course, it is an issue with district blocking on your end).

This is such a cool concept! I've heard of digital escape rooms but had never done one before this. It took me a few reads through the instructions and clicking around on the site just to familiarize myself with how it works. If you've never done this before it's a little confusing to figure out so I would definitely suggest more details in the instructions to the teachers on what exactly the students are supposed to be doing to make it easier for first timers to understand. I did this activity with some of my 8th grade students and they LOVED this challenge. They had a lot of fun working in groups, trying and failing and succeeding. It was a good team building activity and they learned a lot about the topic. I love that it made them think outside the box. Only one out of the 10 teams I did this with was able to solve the whole challenge, but most were very close. If we had more time I definitely would have had more groups finish. There are a couple links that didn't work. Specifically one page just wouldn't load, and another led to a blog but the post has been deleted. This didn't keep my students from completing the challenge but did lead to some confusion.

I did this game today in class and the kids enjoyed it. This was a very complete activity. There were notes about a few links having issues, but i did not cause a problem for my kids. My French III class solved this in under and hour and French I solved this in about 30 minutes.

This is a great idea...except the clues are not very obvious. You will need to give students clues in order for them to complete it.
Melanie M.
This was very challenging for my 7th grade students. I gave them clues on the board for navigating the pages. Youtube is blocked on our school server, so they were unable to view the King Cake video. The first team to complete the activity took about an hour. This was a fun use of technology and a break from the classroom routine. I would recommend doing the activity first and creating "hints" for the students before presenting in class.

Thank you :)
