Description

This French reading comprehension activity will teach your students about the atrocities that took place in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane during the Nazi occupation of France.  It is suitable for novice-high/intermediate-low students with teacher guidance and higher level students to work independently.  If you teach AP French, this reading can be useful in giving your students practice reading non-fiction articles for the interpretive section of the test.  The reading can lead to discussion or writing activities to include the other two modes of communication.

The village of Oradour-sur-Glane was a peaceful one, until the morning of July 10, 1944. The Nazis were angry about the capture of one of their men, and they took their revenge on the village. After the war ended, the inhabitants chose to leave the village as it was on the day of the massacre as a memorial to those lost. Learn about the events of the day and how the village lives on in this reading.
