Spanish Cinco de Mayo/5 de Mayo/May 5 Digital Escape Game HS Activities
(40 ratings)$4.25
Add to cartake learning about Cinco de Mayo interesting with this no-prep digital escape game. The game includes access to a website where your students will hunt for the keys to unlock a set of locks. Students will need to read the clues very carefully and watch videos, visit websites, and read texts to find the information they need to win the game. Very easy to use - just send your students to the website and let them work! Students can play individually or in teams.
Note: The game has been updated to use the genial.ly platform. The old Google Sites version of the game is still available and you can choose to use that if you like. The instructions include links for both versions, so pick whichever one suits your needs better.
Cinco de Mayo is almost here! Your friend from Puebla has sent you some candies from Mexico, but in order to open the box and retrieve them, you will have to figure out the codes that open the locks by learning about Cinco de Mayo and the traditions surrounding it. This is a challenging activity that students will need to work together and think critically in order to complete. Some readings are in English while others are in Spanish.
Digital escape games are a fun way to start a unit, or to review at the end of a unit. They can also be used to learn about a cultural or historical event. This game will have your students reading carefully and paying attention to the smallest details in order to complete the challenge and unlock the locks.
This item includes:
Your students will enjoy learning without even realizing that they are learning! The challenging game format will get them excited about finding the code to unlock each lock - and the format of the clues for each lock will have them paying close attention - there's no way to solve the puzzles without being 100% focused!
Topics in this game include:
Prep is very easy - you just need to share the website URL with your students. You may want to test the site before you use it, just to make sure nothing is blocked by your district. As some of the clues can be challenging to unlock, you may choose to help your students with the trickier ones. With the teacher guide, you will have the answer key - so you can help guide students towards the correct answer by giving them hints, or if you have limited time, you can adjust the game by reducing the number of locks they need to unlock - just give them the answer(s) to help the activity fit your time constraints.

I made this an optional activity for class on Cinco de mayo. Those students who chose to do it were VERY engaged! The creator gave very good instructions and even hints about how to use it when the site might be bogged down by the many users on Cinco de mayo in particular. She even made a custom site so I didn't have to deal with slow loading of the resources. The only downside was that even though our tech gods unblocked the website, some of the linked sites were still blocked for some students by our internet filters. Not that it reflects poorly on the seller, but just as a heads up to all potential users. Thank you!

Fun activity I used with my Spanish 3 students for a change of pace on Cinco de Mayo last year. They enjoyed the escape room. Definitely recommend.

My students and I love it. This inspired me to have a selfie area with Hispanic props to have students a break. Well done. After a short explanation on how to find the clues, they were able to figure it out. This is a keeper. Thank you!!!

I'm very excited to try this with our Escape Day for all the 8th grade students, especially since not all students take Spanish. It's challenging enough and fits the time frame perfectly. Thank you!

This was a great way for my Spanish III/IV to review Cinco de Mayo.

Challenges students and leaves them a little frustrated (in a good way!). I loved that they were learning about culture in a new way, rather than a typical video or reading. Thank you!!

Wonderful resource!

While my students did think this was hard (as they do with all breakouts), as they left I asked if they learned anything & they said yes! So that’s a win!

Hello I cannot send this link to my students! Need help ASAP
Elena O.
It took me a while to figure it out but once I did the effort was totally worth it! My students are having such a BLAST trying to solve it! They are ALL totally engaged and working cooperatively with giant smiles on their faces. Thank you for such a creative activity :) P.S. Honestly, I don't know how one could explain it better... one just needs to try it...

Did you download the pdf file? There is a password that you will need in order to access it. Or is it that you can't get to the link at all?
Candida K.
An intriguing, very challenging way to learn about Cinco de mayo!
Theresa F.
Overall, it is a great idea and concept. Thank you. However, I think you forgot a link to the last, or the poblano page. Kids did NOT know how to come up with the four-digit number. Please update.

It seems to be working for me - it's the blue paper right in the center of the image, which will take you to the clue page. Clicking on the grocery list should open a forced-copy google sheet. Students answer the first question (using google is fine for this one) and if they get it correct, it will pop up with the link to find the rest of the answers for the four-digit numbers.

I will be trying this out this year! Can't wait!

Thanks so much. My students LOVE these!!

I'm excited to try this with my students.

This is great! Thank you!

My students love these. They are in 8th grade. I tell them they can't ask me any questions until after 10 minutes. It helps make them problem solve on their own. They are so used to instant answers. I like that this forces them to think differently.

Gracias

Great game. I was wondering if it would be possible to be able to copy the Google Form. I would like to add a few more locks/clues adding more of them in Spanish as I teach higher levels.
Reply from Frenchified
You could make a new form and send me the embed code- I can copy it onto the front page. Would the clues be on the existing linked pages? If you are adding more links/pages those would also need to be added as clickable parts of the image.

This breakout was impossible to do because there was not enough information provided. There are no videos linked in, there were not informational pages that would allow students to answer their questions. It was a waste of time trying to figure it out.

I'm sorry to hear that you were not able to play the game. The videos and links are definitely there - you have to look for them, they are hidden in the images. It is definitely a challenging activity, as all breakouts should be. I am wondering if there were technical issues that caused the videos and links not to open for you?
Catherine T.
Love it!
Claudia R.
This was so fun! I can't wait to have them try it. I never figured out the 4 digit, found the spreadsheet and the clue, but it unlocked anyway. LOVE these!
