Description

These 50 Grammar Time Filler Warm-Ups are exactly what your reluctant or struggling writers need to improve their grammar and writing skills. You’ll get access to both a PowerPoint presentation and a Google Slideshow with 10 weeks of no-prep digital bell-ringers that focus on writing and punctuating complete sentences. Each of the 5 weekly prompts or tasks uses both images and music to get kids engaged and excited about grammar and writing. It’s like a workout for the imagination! **NOTE: The music will play automatically when in slideshow mode.

These bell-ringer warms up activities can either be fast-paced bell-work activities or can be stretched and combined to take up the entire class period. Use these slides for daily spiral grammar review, mini-lessons, small group instruction, independent work, centers, or leave them in your sub plans. Ideal for grades 3-6, ELD students, reluctant and struggling writers, SPED teachers, and substitute teachers or sub plans.

5 ACTIVITIES PER WEEK . . .

Fix a Fragment - 10 Warm-Ups

Students will fix one sentence fragment as many different ways as they can before time runs out. This requires that students can identify what information is missing, add the missing info, review the new sentence to make sure it expresses a complete thought and add any necessary punctuation. The fragment can be used at the beginning, middle, or end of a complete sentence.

Fix a Run-On - 10 Warm-Ups

Break a run-on sentence down into complete sentence(s). Students will ID where the info in the sentence can be broken apart, identify what punctuation is missing or needed, then add any necessary punctuation and capitalization.

Combine Sentences - 10 Warm-Ups

The beauty of sentence combining is that there is multiple possible ways to combine these sentences! As students learn new grammar structures and comma rules, they'll find new ways to combine 3 basic sentences in order to create one powerful sentence. The Teacher's Guide does give 1 potential sentence combination for each of the 10 warm-ups. Printable versions of the 3 sentences to be combined are provided for student support and accommodations.

Punctuate Me (punctuate an unpunctuated passage) - 10 Warm-Ups

Develop a writer's ear by punctuating an unpunctuated paragraph. Students are encouraged to read the passage aloud in order to hear and identify complete thoughts, adding punctuation marks as they go. Students then check to ensure they have created complete sentences and capitalized appropriately. This activity can act as a review or preview of new comma rules to be learned. A printable version of each passage is provided for student support and accommodations.

Mimic a Mentor Sentence - 10 Warm-Ups

Imitate a mentor sentence by tinkering and playing with words and punctuation. It’s a really fun but challenging way to try out new sentence structures and author’s craft moves.

You’ll Get . . .

  • 50 warm-up slides (5 different weekly activities for 10 weeks) in PPT and download link to Google Slides

  • Activity tutorial slides (includes activity directions & examples, table of contents with links to slides, and troubleshooting help)

  • Teacher’s Guide

  • Weekly Worksheet (optional)

IN MY OWN CLASSROOM . . .

I use these grammar warm-ups with my ELA intervention class and they absolutely love these activities. Even though my group of intervention students are below grade-level readers and writers, they absolutely love these challenges. According to the kids, these slides, including the music and images, are a fun way to learn grammar.

As a teacher, I love that each slide can be used as a fast stand-alone activity OR as a springboard into a deeper grammar lesson. Rather than do one a day, I like to hone in and target a specific skill by using all of those specific activity slides in the same week.
