Beginning L-Blends Scavenger Hunt – BL, CL, FL, GL, PL & SL Phonics Activity

Turn beginning L-blend practice into an active, hands-on phonics game with this printable Beginning L-Blends Scavenger Hunt.

Children search for hidden picture cards, name each picture, read the word and identify the beginning blend. The resource focuses on six common L-blends:

bl • cl • fl • gl • pl • sl

The beginning blend is highlighted within each labelled/labeled word, helping children see the consonant pattern while still reading the complete word.

The pack then progresses to picture-only challenge cards, where the written word is removed so children must identify the picture, recall the word and recognise the beginning blend independently.

The 24 hunt words are:

bl: blimp, block, blanket, blender

cl: clock, clam, clown, cloud

fl: flag, flower, flute, fly

gl: glove, globe, glass, glue

pl: plane, plant, plate, plum

sl: sled, slug, sloth, slipper

Two Levels of Challenge

Level 1 – Word Support

Children use the labelled/labeled cards to:

• identify the picture

• read the complete word

• notice the highlighted beginning blend

• match the card to the checklist

Level 2 – Picture-Only Challenge

The words are removed from the cards, encouraging children to identify each picture and recall its beginning blend without written support.

The picture-only set mirrors the full 24-word collection.

Extend the Learning

The L-Blends Hunt Recording Sheet gives children space to draw four pictures they found, write each word and record its beginning blend.

It also introduces the important phonics idea that both consonant sounds can still be heard in a blend, for example:

bl = /b/ + /l/

cl = /k/ + /l/

The Beginning L-Blends Learning Extension develops this further by asking children to identify the word, record the beginning blend, say both sounds separately and think of another word beginning with the same blend.

A completion certificate is also included for finishing the hunt.
