Make beginning-sound practice active and engaging with this printable Beginning Sounds Scavenger Hunt.
Children search for hidden picture cards, name each picture, listen carefully for the beginning sound, and tick the matching item on their checklist. The resource then extends learning through recording, drawing, sound identification, and phonics discussion activities.
This resource includes 48 hunt cards in two challenge levels:
24 labeled picture cards support children by pairing each illustration with its word.
24 picture-only challenge cards remove the written cue, encouraging children to name the picture independently and listen for its beginning sound.
The checklist reinforces 12 beginning sounds using two different picture words for each sound, helping children hear that different words can begin with the same phoneme.

Beginning Sounds Practiced
The pack focuses on:
/m/, /s/, /t/, /p/, /f/, /n/, /b/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /h/, /r/
Picture examples include:
moon, mouse, sun, sock, turtle, tent, pig, pear, fish, fan, nest, nose, ball, bus, dog, duck, cat, cup, goat, glove, hat, hand, rabbit, and ring.
Built-In Differentiation
Use the labeled picture cards first for supported vocabulary and picture-word recognition.
Then move to the picture-only cards so children must:
name the picture → isolate the initial sound → connect the sound to the word
This gives you two levels of challenge using the same picture set.
Extend the Learning
The included Beginning Sounds Learning Extension encourages children to record:
the picture
the word
the beginning letter
the beginning sound
another word with the same beginning sound
The extension also includes discussion prompts about matching sounds, hearing initial phonemes, and changing the first sound in a word.
The recording sheet gives children space to draw and name four items they found during the hunt.
