Description

If your students jump into Antigone without enough context, the opening scene can feel confusing from the start. This resource gives them the background that matters most—without turning pre-reading into an overlong mythology lecture.

Students work through the House of Thebes family tree, the key Oedipus backstory, the conflict between Eteocles and Polynices, the importance of burial customs in Greek culture, and the competing obligations that drive Antigone’s first major decision. The lesson then ends with a guided reading lens students can carry directly into the Prologue.

The student materials have been designed as a cohesive guided-notes packet with atmospheric classical visuals, clear organization, and usable writing space. The presentation, packet, and teacher materials are all coordinated so the lesson feels polished and easy to teach.
