Jane Austen Quotes Bookmarks English Novel Literature Appreciation Pansy Flowers

Teach Dante’s nine circles of Hell without requiring students to read the entire Inferno.
In this two-day creative literature lesson, students first learn how Dante organizes the underworld, why the order of the circles matters, and how contrapasso connects wrongdoing to punishment. Then they use that structure to create a modern Inferno of their own.
The activity can be funny—and the outer circles often are. But as students descend, they have to move beyond everyday annoyances and make increasingly thoughtful decisions about harm, dishonesty, cruelty, betrayal, and trust. By Circle IX, their hierarchy has become an argument about what they believe people owe one another.
Students practice literary analysis without being pushed immediately into an essay. They explain why each punishment fits, why each offense belongs lower than the one before it, and what their finished Inferno reveals about their own moral hierarchy.
Students do not need to have read Dante’s Inferno before beginning this lesson. The presentation provides the background they need.
