Students can summarize what happens on the island. This companion asks them to do something more useful: track what happens to the boys' shared society as it weakens, fractures, and finally collapses.
In CIVILIZATION UNDER PRESSURE, students return to the same five indicators at six points in Lord of the Flies:
• Shared Authority
• Responsibility
• Reason & Evidence
• Restraint
• Common Purpose
At each checkpoint, students rate the strength of the shared island society, support the rating with evidence, and make a brief judgment about what is changing. The repeated framework lets students see patterns build across the novel instead of treating each chapter as a separate set of events.
WHAT STUDENTS DO
• Establish a theory of what holds a society together before reading
• Learn a five-part stability framework
• Revisit the framework at six chapter checkpoints
• Rate each indicator from 1–5
• Identify evidence of stability and instability

• Identify and defend a tipping point
• Determine which indicator failed first
• Write a final claim about what the novel suggests a society needs in order to remain stable

A NOTE ABOUT THE RATINGS
There is not one correct number for every checkpoint. Two students can defend different ratings with equally strong evidence. The rating is a claim; the evidence and explanation are the work.
Students are asked to rate the boys' shared island society, not simply how organized one faction becomes. A group can become tightly controlled while the larger shared society is falling apart.
FLEXIBLE CLASSROOM USE
Use the full six-checkpoint companion throughout the novel, pull selected checkpoint pages for discussion or quick writing, or use the one-page tracker when you want the recurring thinking with less paper.
The full checkpoint pages work well after students finish the assigned chapters. The quick tracker can also be used as a 5–8 minute callback.
USING STRANDED! BEFORE THE NOVEL?
This resource works naturally after my STRANDED! survival simulation. STRANDED! asks students to build a society. Civilization Under Pressure asks them to watch Golding's society change and decide what is holding it together—or failing.
