Look no further than the Decoding Multisyllable Nonsense Words Phonics Game! Players use word-decoding skills and syllable-division rules to read multisyllable nonsense words correctly.
This game is so much fun, your students won't even realize they're learning! Providing practice with syllable division rules, syllable types, and decoding skills, this game is a great way to help your students improve their reading skills.
Word cards were created using EZRead Kids Font, made for dyslexic readers and students who learn differently. This game can be used as extra practice for students using any Orton-Gillingham-based reading program. Players practice identifying letters and blending sounds to decode words.
Cards may also be used as flashcards or as a matching game activity. This game provides differentiated instruction for tutoring sessions, general classroom use, homeschool, and special education.
The decoding skills used in these words include syllable division, v-e syllables, closed syllables, open syllables, r-controlled syllables, le syllables, vowel teams, short vowel sounds, consonants, digraphs, CVC words, the sounds of am and an, the ll,ss,ff spelling rule, the suffix s, blends, and welded sounds (ing, ang, ong, ung, ink, ank, onk, and unk). A list of words used in this game is provided. Plus, you get an editable card PowerPoint file so you can add your own words.

I simply cannot share enough what a dynamite purchase this was! First of all, who doesn't like UNO?! Kids do have to focus on many things to play a card game, but since they reeeally want to play, they remember what you have to teach beforehand: how to deal, what to do with cards after the dealer is done, how to match color, what does reverse mean, are we still going in reverse, etc. (basic card etiquette and rules) THEN...comes the sounding out like you've never seen before AND the chit chat that develops among unlikely suspects regarding the funny nonsense words. I mean, when do kids get to be silly AND practice phonics in this sneaky way?!! I pull over high kids and play with them and then pair them up with struggling kiddos to play in small groups and they correct each other and tell why and how it could be and what would happen if there were an "e" at the end etc. I've also divided up the decks and sent them home for a special night of "homework" and they BEG to play. This is part of our weekly rotation of "games" we play now. Run each deck on a different color of cardstock and you're good to go!

What a wonderful game! This has been so helpful for my higher readers to make sure they understand how to sound out and blend words they have never seen before. This is helpful so I can see if they can read because they have memorized words or if they can read them. They love this game!
