This fun Latin roots game activity helps kids practice word attack skills, vocabulary, and quickly recognize six frequently occurring Latin roots. Players must be able to use word and syllable decoding skills to correctly read words and get rid of their cards.
Through repetitive play, students practice longer unfamiliar words to expand their vocabulary, sight word, and spelling skills. The roots used in this game are: tract, spect, port, dict, scrib, and rupt. A list of words used is on page 21.
Editable cards are included so you can customize the game to your needs.
This game can be used as extra practice for students using any Orton Gillingham-based reading program. Cards may also be used as flash cards or as a matching game activity. This game provides differentiated instruction for tutoring sessions, general classroom use, homeschool, and special education.

May 1, 2024I use this game in my small groups. Students are constantly asking me when we will play again. They love this game. I typically have students match by feature instead of color or number. So if the last card has a short a sound the card they lay must have a short a sound. If a word starts with ch the next card layed has to have ch somewhere in it. This has really helped students identify parts of words!

March 25, 2024I've used this with both my first and second grade reading students. The poems were nice and short, so we were able to work more on the sounds of the welded chunks. There was a "pre-worksheet" for each poem that laid down the foundation nicely. You could also do a little bit of comprehension work with the poems as well.

However, I am not using it as much as I would like to since I already teach a very in-depth phonic lessons in my classroom and we do a lot of review. It has however been useful in my small groups.
