Description

Make comparing numbers super fun with this Build a Mermaid/Merman Math Game! This engaging resource helps students master comparing numbers to 20.

⭐ What’s Included:

  • 2 sets of task cards for flexible differentiation:

    • Set 1: 26 Task cards showing two numbers to compare

    • Set 2: 26 Task cards with greater than (>), less than (<), and equal (=) symbols printed at the bottom for visual support

  • 26 answer cards (print front/back for self-checking)

  • 2 Mermaids/Mermen (each available in two skin tones for inclusivity)

  • Mermaid/Merman Recording Mats in two versions:

    • Blank mats for independent responses

    • Mats with symbols to trace for learners needing more support

  • Recording sheets in two versions

Materials come in both color and black and white options. Students can play individually, in pairs, as a small group for an engaging, collaborative math challenge... or make it a Students vs. Teacher game for super engagement and fun!

⭐ How to Play

  1. Players choose a task card and compare the two sets of objects.

  2. They decide if the first group is greater than, less than, or equal to the second group.

  3. Once they record or trace their answer, students will check their work by flipping over the card to see the answer: correct answers earn a piece to build their character!

  4. The player who completes their mermaid or merman first (or builds the most) wins!

⭐ Skills & Standards Covered

  • Comparing numbers within 20

  • Understanding and using >, <, = symbols

  • Strengthening number sense and reasoning

  • Collaboration and turn-taking during gameplay

⭐ Why Teachers Love It

  • Turns comparing numbers into an interactive, play-based activity

  • Includes built-in differentiation for multiple learning levels

  • Supports visual learners with symbols and hands-on mats

If you have multiple sets of the Build A... Games, you can mix up the characters/objects to keep things new and fresh - just make sure each player has the same number of pieces!
