These Short o CVC Word Family Phonics Mats are a fun and interactive way for students to practice short o word families. Students can use Google Slides or PowerPoint to access the work mats. You also gain access to the paper/printable version of these phonics mats!

Digital Version

There are a total of 8 work slides, with 5 tasks for students to complete per slide. Tasks included in each Short o CVC Word Family Phonics Mat:

  • Students will point and read each word three times. The touch dots are included to help with one to one correspondence.

  • Students will drag and drop to match the picture with the word.

  • Students will look at the picture, say the word, and type the word in the text box. To make this a more meaningful practice, students should say each sound of the word to emphasize the beginning, middle, and ending sounds and their letter associations.

  • Students will read the short story passage.

  • Students will drag and drop a star on each word that matches the focused word family spelling pattern.

Paper/Printable Version

There are a total of 24 pages. Students will cut out pictures and glue to match them with the words. There are 3 options for how students write in the cvc word. The first set of eight pages have a blank line for students to write the whole short o cvc word. The next set of eight pages have the short o cvc filled in and students must trace the focused word family spelling pattern. The last set of eight pages have students trace the whole short o cvc word. Students read the short story passages and circle, or highlight, the short o cvc words.

Word families included in this set: -ob, -od, -og, -op, -ot, -ox.
