In a Science of Reading literacy centre or small-group lesson, students can practise reading prefixes in context while building a stronger understanding of how word parts affect meaning. This 4th–5th grade morphology resource combines explicit prefix instruction, word building, and reading practice in a concise 9-page PDF.
Students are introduced to common prefixes and then apply their learning through seven reading passages focusing on RE, UN, PRE, DIS, IM, NON, and MIS. The passages provide opportunities to identify prefix words in context, locate base words, use context clues to explain meaning, and practise reading comprehension and decoding.

The activities help students notice how affixes can change the meaning of a base word while they read and work with words in context.

Students have repeated opportunities to identify prefixes, think about word structure, and explain meaning using the surrounding text.
