Description

Ecology Case Study "The Role of Mangroves in Coastal Protection"

This resource provides an engaging look at how mangrove forests protect coastlines, support biodiversity, and help regulate Earth’s climate. Students will explore how these unique coastal ecosystems act as natural barriers against storms, prevent erosion, and store large amounts of carbon, while also serving as nurseries for fish, birds, and other wildlife.

Through this real-world case study, students will strengthen their scientific literacy and understanding of how ecosystems provide essential services that protect both people and the planet. They’ll examine the connections between mangroves, climate stability, and human activity, while learning about the threats these ecosystems face and the conservation efforts working to restore them.

This case study serves as an excellent introductory activity for units on ecology, climate change, or ecosystem services. It can also be used as a reading comprehension passage, discussion starter, or standalone lesson to help students interpret, analyze, and apply scientific concepts related to sustainability, conservation, and the interdependence between humans and nature.
