The best part of this assignment is that the students actually learn linear equations and have a great time doing it! Your students will create a picture using an online computer graphing software. They will use multiple linear equations with specific x and y values to create a combination of lines which ultimately make a picture. They are able to take ownership of their work and take great pride in what they produce.

They begin to visualize the equations and be able to predict, with a great deal of accuracy, what shape and direction their equations will take and also how they can manipulate them. Use it summative project to determine student knowledge, as a fun activity or as a way to introduce linear equations to your students. Do you use computers or tablets in the classroom? This assignment allows students to utilize technology effectively and at their own pace. How about Math Workshops? Students practice and play with many different equations in order to create an innovative drawing of their choosing. They can be as creative as they like and use as many equations as necessary. I’ve had students use up to 100 different equations to get the right picture.
