Description

Physical Science Case Study - "Newton's 1st Law - The Bus Stop Surprise"

This resource offers an engaging, real-world look at how inertia influences motion through the lens of Newton’s First Law. Students follow Maya on an ordinary bus ride turned unexpected physics lesson, observing how her body responds when the bus accelerates, slows, and comes to a sudden stop.

Her experience becomes a relatable and memorable illustration of why objects in motion—and at rest—tend to continue their state of motion unless acted upon by an external force.

Through this everyday scenario, students build scientific literacy as they explore how inertia affects passengers on moving vehicles, why holding on is essential for safety, and how forces act on the body during sudden changes in motion. The case study breaks down complex physical science concepts into accessible, story-driven explanations, helping learners connect classroom laws of motion to situations they encounter in daily life.

This resource can be used as an introductory activity for units on force and motion, Newton’s Laws, or real-world physics applications. It also works well as a reading-comprehension passage, discussion starter, or standalone lesson that encourages students to interpret, analyze, and apply core ideas related to motion, inertia, and the relationship between forces and objects.

Your reading contains ~400-500 words plus 5 questions and their answers.

This resource is suitable for students in grades 7-10. Tackle literacy and science by having your students read and answer questions from a scientific article.

No prep, no formatting, no issues. Simply download, project, print (or upload to your class site) and you're all set.
