Students Will Learn

  • Newton’s 3 Laws Summary
  • Newton’s Third Law of Motion - For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
  • Action and Reaction Forces
  • Force and Acceleration
  • Real-World Examples
  • Practice Questions

Included Resources

1) Lesson: Newton's Third Law of Motion Lesson

This lesson on Newton's Third Law of Motion specifically covers Action-Reaction Forces, Applications, and Problem Solving. It also includes a 6-Part worksheet, STEM Investigation, and Case Study Reading.

In order, the lesson covers:

  • Newton’s 3 Laws Summary
  • Newton’s Third Law of Motion - For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
  • Action and Reaction Forces
  • Force and Acceleration
  • Real-World Examples
  • Practice Questions

2) Lab: Newton 3rd Law STEM Investigation - Thrust vs Nozzle Size

Students will investigate Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion by testing how changing the nozzle opening of a water-powered bottle jet affects the distance it travels.

Learning Targets

  • Plan and carry out a controlled investigation with repeated trials
  • Measure travel distance and calculate class averages
  • Graph class data to compare how nozzle diameter affects thrust
  • Construct a CER explaining the relationship between nozzle size and forward motion using Newton’s Third Law
  • Identify variables, maintain controls, and improve test consistency

3) Activity: Newtons Third Law and Colliding Objects Activity

This student-driven activity covers NGSS MS-PS2-1 - Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects.

The emphasis is on examples of practical problems including the collisions between moving and stationary objects.

4) Case Study: Newton's 3rd Law Case Study - Why You Don't Jump off Boats

This engaging resource uses an everyday, relatable scenario to illuminate Newton’s Third Law of Motion through a vivid and memorable case study.

5) Case Study: Newton's Second Law of Motion STEM Investigation

Students will investigate Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion by testing how changing the mass carried by a balloon rocket affects its acceleration. Using a taut string track, a straw, a balloon, and removable mass clips, students run repeated launches to measure travel time and calculate average speed. Through structured trials, data recording, class averaging, graphing, and a CER, students discover how added mass changes motion and why unbalanced forces create different accelerations.

6) Activity: Newton's Laws of Motion Word Search and Scramble Activity

Word Search and Scramble - Newton's Laws of Motion. Ensure your students are challenged by selecting the correct level of difficulty.

7) Worksheet: Newton’s 3 Laws Identification Worksheet

This Newton’s Three Laws of Motion worksheet tests your student's understanding of Newton's 3 Laws. The worksheet consists of 10 real-life scenarios. Your students must identify which of Newton's 3 Laws is used to explain what is happening and why.

8) Worksheet: Newton’s 3rd Law Worksheet

Introduce and/or review Newton's Third Law of Motion—for every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force—with this engaging, print-ready worksheet designed to help learners understand how forces always come in pairs and how action–reaction interactions appear in everyday life.
