Each lesson is from an Ontario perspective.
Specifically designed for Ontario grade 6 classrooms, my unit covers the B2 curriculum expectations
Lesson 1 - Biodiversity Exploration Lesson - Classification, Taxonomy, and Dichotomous Keys
B2.1 - describe the distinguishing characteristics of different groups of organisms, and use these characteristics to further classify these organisms using a classification system.
Lesson 2 - Biodiversity Understanding Middle School Lesson - Life's Variety
B2.2 - demonstrate an understanding of biodiversity as the diversity of life on Earth, including the diversity of organisms within species, among species in a community, and among communities and the habitats that support them.
Lesson 3 - Biodiversity and Species Resilience Lesson – Importance for Species and Ecosystems
B2.3 - describe ways in which biodiversity within species is essential for their survival.
B2.4 - describe ways in which biodiversity within and among communities is essential for maintaining the resilience of these communities.
Lesson 4 - Biodiversity and Interrelationships – Species Interactions and Relationships
B2.5 - describe interrelationships within species, between species, and between species and their natural environment, and explain how these interrelationships sustain biodiversity.
Lesson 5 - Biodiversity and Invasive Species Middle School Lesson - Reducing Biodiversity
B2.6 - explain how invasive species reduce biodiversity in local environments.
Lesson 6 - Biodiversity and Climate Change Middle School Lesson
B2.7 - explain how climate change contributes to a loss of biodiversity, and describe the impact of this loss.
Lesson 7 - Biodiversity and Indigenous Agriculture - Middle School Lesson
B2.8 - describe the importance of biodiversity in supporting agriculture, including Indigenous agriculture around the world.
B2 Culminating Projects - Biodiversity Culminating Project Bundle - 3 Projects - Middle School Science
This unit includes a full lesson set for complete coverage of Biodiversity including how it connected to climate change, indigenous agriculture, invasive species, species resilience, and how life is classified. It includes everything you will need to teach a unit on Biodiversity for a middle school science class.
For Each Lesson
The student version of the presentation contains multiple blanks that need to be filled in throughout the lesson. These blanks are conveniently underlined and bolded on the teacher copy. I have found this to be the most effective means of keeping my students engaged and active without having them write everything out. This also leaves more time for discussion and activities.
Culminating Projects
These projects allow you to differentiate your instruction and provide variety and choice to your students. They will challenge your students to explain content in an informative and visually appealing manner while also delving deeper into the content that you've covered in your Biodiversity Unit.
These resources are in .zip format. All that means is you download the lesson package as one file (.zip) and then double-click it to extract it.
