Note: This resource is geared towards students in middle school. If you'd like something for high school students, please click here.

Engage. Educate. Excite. With this ready-to-go assignment, your students will dive deep into the world of photosynthesis by crafting their own comic books. This unique narrative approach allows students to personify a carbon atom and visually narrate its journey through the process of photosynthesis. Not only will they reinforce their scientific knowledge, but they'll also develop their storytelling and artistic skills, appealing to a broad range of learning styles.

Why Choose the Photosynthesis Comic Book Assignment? The Photosynthesis Comic Book Assignment is more than just a science lesson; it's a cross-curricular project that taps into students' creativity and imagination. By illustrating and writing a comic book, students will:

  • Master Complex Content: Break down the intricate steps of photosynthesis into accessible, bite-sized pieces.
  • Boost Engagement: Capture the attention of visual and linguistic learners with a comic book format.
  • Encourage Creativity: Provide an outlet for creative expression through character creation and storytelling.
  • Enhance Communication: Help students learn to convey scientific concepts in a clear and engaging way for younger audiences.
  • Promote Reflection: Include a reflection component to encourage metacognition and self-assessment.

What's Included? The Photosynthesis Comic Book Assignment comes with detailed instructions, a grading rubric, and additional resources to guide your students through the project. From the initial concept to the final presentation, every step is outlined to ensure your students have a clear roadmap to success.

Flexible and Adaptable This assignment is designed to be flexible. It can be adapted for a range of abilities. Digital and hand-drawn submissions are both welcomed, so every student can shine in their own way.

Build a Foundation for Future Learning By simplifying a complex biological process into a narrative format, students will build a strong foundational understanding of photosynthesis. This assignment provides a memorable learning experience that will stick with them as they progress in their science education.

Formats:

This activity comes in Word, PDF, and Google doc formats so you can assign digitally or print for student handouts.

  • Your resource integrates seamlessly with Google Classroom as I've included a link that will automatically create a copy of the resource and put it directly into your Google Drive with one click.
  • Purchase --> Open --> Click --> Assign to your students

The Rubric:

A clear and comprehensive rubric is included, offering four distinct criteria: Accuracy of Content, Clarity and Organization, Visual Appeal and Creativity, Legibility and Quality of Presentation, and Adherence to Guidelines. Each criterion is broken down into five levels, from 0 (not meeting expectations) to 4 (exceeding expectations), making grading straightforward and transparent.

The Photosynthesis Comic Book Assignment could be aligned with the following Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):

  • MS-LS1-6: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.
    • In this project, students would be creating infographics to explain how photosynthesis contributes to the cycling of matter (carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen) and the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy.

  • MS-LS1-7: Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism.
    • Although this standard is more closely related to cellular respiration and digestion, the infographic could include information on how the glucose produced in photosynthesis is utilized by organisms, which could also touch upon these concepts.

  • MS-ESS3-3: Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.
    • While not directly related to photosynthesis, understanding the process is essential for addressing human impacts on the environment, such as deforestation, which affects the level of photosynthesis on a global scale. Students can include sections on their infographic related to the importance of photosynthesis in maintaining a balanced atmosphere and how protecting plant life is crucial for environmental health.

Share the Joy of Science Once completed, these comic books serve as a fantastic resource that can be shared with elementary students, promoting peer learning and community engagement. Your students will take pride in knowing their work is teaching others.
