Description

Engage Your Students with a Creative Exploration of Photosynthesis!

This project merges science with art, allowing students to express their understanding of photosynthesis through visual storytelling. Designed to align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), this assignment will challenge your students to explain content into an informative and visually appealing infographic suitable for display.

Note: This resource is geared towards students in high school. If you'd like something for middle school students, please click here.

What’s Inside:

This ready-to-use package includes a detailed assignment sheet and a student-friendly rubric for easy grading. This assignment has been created to provide clear directions and expectations, ensuring your students know precisely what to research, create, and submit.

Assignment Overview:

Students will research the stages of photosynthesis, including light absorption, energy conversion, glucose production, and oxygen release. They will then design an infographic that makes this complex process accessible and engaging to their peers. The project encourages the use of digital tools or traditional art materials, allowing for a range of student expression and creativity.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Standards-Aligned: The assignment aligns with NGSS HS-LS1-5, HS-LS1-6, HS-LS2-3, and HS-LS2-5, focusing on the process of photosynthesis and its role in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.
  • Cross-Curricular: This assignment bridges the gap between science and the arts, encouraging creativity while reinforcing scientific concepts.
  • Differentiated Learning: Suitable for various learning styles and abilities, this project allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in a format that best suits their skills.
  • Engagement & Autonomy: Students take charge of their learning by researching, designing, and presenting their infographics.
  • Classroom-Ready: No additional prep needed! Download, print, and distribute to your class.

How Your Students Will Benefit:

Upon completing this assignment, students will have a deeper understanding of photosynthesis, be able to articulate the process clearly, and appreciate the importance of plants in our ecosystem. They will develop skills in research, information synthesis, graphic design, and science communication.

Formats:

This activity comes in Word, PDF, and Google doc formats so you can assign digitally or print for student handouts.

  • Your resource integrates seamlessly with Google Classroom as I've included a link that will automatically create a copy of the resource and put it directly into your Google Drive with one click.

The Rubric:

A clear and comprehensive rubric is included, offering four distinct criteria: Accuracy of Content, Clarity and Organization, Visual Appeal and Creativity, Legibility and Quality of Presentation, and Adherence to Guidelines. Each criterion is broken down into five levels, from 0 (not meeting expectations) to 4 (exceeding expectations), making grading straightforward and transparent.

The Photosynthesis Infographic Design Assignment could be aligned with the following Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):

  • HS-LS1-5: Use a model to illustrate how photosynthesis transforms light energy into stored chemical energy.
    • This assignment has students create a visual representation – an infographic – that serves as a model illustrating the transformation of energy that occurs during photosynthesis.

  • HS-LS1-6: Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for how carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen from sugar molecules may combine with other elements to form amino acids and/or other large carbon-based molecules.
    • While the primary focus of the assignment is on photosynthesis, students could extend their infographics to show how the glucose produced is utilized in forming more complex molecules, thus building a foundational understanding of how photosynthesis contributes to larger biological processes.

  • HS-LS2-3: Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for the cycling of matter and flow of energy in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
    • Through the creation of the infographic, students can illustrate the cycling of matter (carbon, oxygen, hydrogen) and the flow of energy during the light-dependent and light-independent reactions of photosynthesis. They could also compare these processes to cellular respiration to demonstrate understanding of energy flow in aerobic conditions.

  • HS-LS2-5: Develop a model to illustrate the role of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the cycling of carbon among the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere.
    • The assignment could be extended to have students include elements in their infographic that show how photosynthesis is part of the global carbon cycle, linking to cellular respiration and the exchange of carbon between different Earth systems.

How to Use:

This assignment can be integrated into your plant biology unit, used as a standalone project, or serve as a summative assessment. It's perfect for classroom display, helping to create an environment rich in student-created content.
