The student version of the presentation contains multiple blanks that need to be filled in throughout the lesson. These blanks are conveniently underlined and bolded on the teacher copy. Specifically, the lesson introduces concepts like distances in space, astronomical units, and scales in the universe. Developing conceptual models to explain gravity's role in celestial motions aligns with MS-ESS1-2. Introducing techniques to analyze and interpret astronomical data ties to MS-ESS1-3 as well.

By establishing foundational knowledge of size and distance scales in space, students have an opportunity through this introductory lesson to begin learning core ideas presented in these two NGSS middle school Earth and space science standards. It provides a starting point for more in-depth instruction on these expectations.
