Description

This grade 8 reading helps students explore the effects of everyday forces, including magnetic forces, electrostatic forces, and gravitational forces. Students learn how these forces work, why they can attract or repel objects, and how they appear in real-world examples such as static shocks, compasses, MRI machines, copiers, laser printers, air cleaners, satellites, roller coasters, and astronauts experiencing weightlessness. This resource includes a reading passage, 8 comprehension questions, 3 extension questions, and a full answer key.

The reading also explores important physical science concepts such as diamagnetic, paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic materials, positive and negative charges, static electricity, gravity, orbit, inverse square law, and free fall. It is a strong fit for physical science, forces and motion, electricity and magnetism, and space science discussions because it connects abstract force concepts to examples students can recognize.

We don't spend enough time teaching scientific literacy to our students. This is either because we don't have the resources to do so effectively or we don't have the time. However, teaching our students to become scientifically literate is vital if we want them to succeed in life. We need them to know about the world they live in and about the issues they face. Even issues as simple as the common cold are misunderstood and can lead to the misuse of antibacterial drugs eventually rendering them ineffective.

It can be used as a tool in your teaching arsenal on a regular basis, an extension activity for your faster learners, left for a substitute in an emergency or planned absence or as an extra bit of information for a topic.
