Description

Explorers to New York: Verrazzano, Champlain & Hudson. NYS Social Studies Framework 4.3a. This Grade 4 New York State Social Studies unit addresses NYS Framework 4.3a and introduces students to European exploration of what is now New York State. Students begin by building background knowledge about the Age of Exploration, including why Europeans searched for routes to Asia and how trade routes shaped exploration. Students then examine the seven specific reasons for exploration and apply their understanding through structured group work. The unit concludes with a focused study of Giovanni da Verrazzano, Samuel de Champlain, and Henry Hudson, using informational text and multiple primary sources to complete a comparison chart and map each explorer’s route, with additional emphasis on Henry Hudson to support later learning about trade and Native American interactions.
