Description

Help students find, identify, and support answers with text evidence! This FREE reading comprehension activity gives students in Grades 3–5 meaningful practice locating evidence in informational and fictional texts.

Prove It! is a simple, effective ELA strategy that helps students develop the skills they need to cite textual evidence, support their thinking, and prepare for written responses using the RACE strategy (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain).

Students read three short passages, consider a statement about each text, and underline the sentences or details that provide the strongest supporting evidence.

What's Included?

  • Three reading passages with text evidence challenges:

    • The Busy Beaver – Informational text about beaver behavior and habitats

    • Making Photography for Everyone – Informational text about New York inventor and entrepreneur George Eastman

    • More Than Just a Garden – Realistic fiction about teamwork and problem-solving

  • Clear student directions for identifying supporting evidence

  • Teacher answer key with suggested evidence and instructional notes

  • a quick ELA review activity.

The Prove It! strategy also works beyond this printable. During classroom discussions, ask students, "Can you prove it?" Encourage them to return to the text, identify supporting details, and explain how those details support their answers.

This practice helps build the connection between oral reading discussions and evidence-based written responses.

Why Teachers Will Love It:

  • This no-prep, print-and-go text evidence activity provides focused reading comprehension practice without requiring a lengthy lesson. The three passages offer opportunities to identify both directly stated evidence and details that support broader conclusions.

  • Designed for 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade ELA classrooms, this free printable can be used throughout the school year to reinforce essential reading comprehension and textual evidence skills.
