Add to cartNew York State Social Studies Framework 4.5b: In Search of Freedom and a Call for Change — Women’s Rights in New York is a comprehensive fourth grade social studies three-lesson resource designed to help students investigate the fight for women’s rights in New York State and the United States during the 1800s. Through engaging informational texts, primary source analysis, inquiry-based activities, and ELA-integrated lessons, students explore how reformers worked to expand rights and challenge unfair laws and social expectations.
This standards-aligned resource introduces students to influential women’s rights leaders including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Matilda Joslyn Gage, Elizabeth Blackwell, Amelia Bloomer, and Sojourner Truth. Students examine the rights denied to women during the 19th century while investigating how reformers used speeches, writing, conventions, and activism to bring about social change.
A major focus of this unit is the Seneca Falls Convention and the Declaration of Sentiments. Students closely examine primary sources and compare the Declaration of Sentiments to the Declaration of Independence in order to deepen their understanding of equality, citizenship, and civic action. Carefully scaffolded activities encourage students to analyze historical documents, identify important ideas, compare perspectives, and support responses using evidence from the text.
