(1 rating)$5.00
Add to cartThe Importance of New York in the American Revolution. This comprehensive Grades 4, 5, 6 Social Studies and ELA lesson examines why New York’s geographic location and physical features made it strategically vital during the American Revolution. This resource supports ELA integrated instruction through close reading, map analysis, and evidence-based writing. Students investigate how growing political and economic conflicts between England and the 13 Colonies led to war, and why both the British and Patriots sought control of New York due to its rivers, mountains, and central location among the colonies. Through compelling questions and structured activities, students build historical understanding while strengthening informational reading and writing skills.

I found this later into our unit to use as a supplement, but plan to use it all next year! Great layout of lessons with plans, map examples, and maps for students to fill out. I used the blank map with cut out pieces to send home with students for review, and they loved piecing together the names with locations. They also easily made flashcards with the vocabulary/pictures. I plan to use the entire unit next year as it covers the standards and is very student-friendly! The only thing I found difficult was very small font on some documents.

This is a substantive resource that is a great companion for any lesson about the Great Lakes. Not only is there information about the history of the Erie Canal, but also about how the locks in the canal work. It is a cross-curricular resource that combines history and engineering concepts. Overall, a great find!
