Description

Design a Plant: Adapted to Changes in Climate & Environment

What will plants look like in the future? This imaginative science activity invites students to dive deep into the world of plant adaptations, exploring how climate change is already shaping the natural world — and how plants of the future might evolve to survive it.

Students begin by reading about how climate affects plant growth: rising CO₂ levels, heat waves, cold snaps, stronger winds, and shifting pollinator relationships. They explore how leaves may grow thicker or darker, why some plants are blooming earlier, and what happens when a cherry tree blossoms before the bees arrive. From there, students compare climate challenges for animals and plants using a Venn diagram, brainstorm ideas on a research page, plan their design, then bring their very own "Plant of the Future" to life through drawing and writing.

The result? Genuinely fascinating plant creations, rich classroom discussion, and deep thinking about nature, biodiversity, and our changing climate.

This 24-page print resource includes reading pages on how plants may react to climate changes, an Animals vs Plants Venn diagram, a research brainstorm page, a planning page, and 10 differentiated "Plant of the Future" design templates — each featuring a different plant starter illustration (cactus, deciduous tree, oak tree, sunflower, flower bouquet, maple leaf, seed pod, dandelion seed, and more) with a Before & After format so students can show their plant's transformation.

Perfect for upper primary science, this open-ended, no-prep activity sparks rich conversations about plants, animals, nature, and climate change.

Think Dive is built on a simple idea: a handful of curiosity + a bucket of imagination = learning that sticks. Every resource is designed to spark original thinking in young minds.
