Inspiring Plants and Fungi Activities | Unique Biomimicry Adventures

What could a pitcher plant teach us about self-cleaning windows, or a cactus about collecting water from the air? Plants & Fungi Biomimicry Adventures turns your classroom into an innovation lab, where students learn from nature's most ingenious engineers and then design their own inventions.

Through activities, students discover how plants and fungi have solved tough problems over millions of years. They start with the fundamentals: plant anatomy, photosynthesis, types of plants, the parts of a mushroom, and how fungi differ from plants. Then they move on to the adaptations that inspire real designs, such as dandelion parachute seeds, slippery pitcher plants, water-storing cacti, salt-resistant coconut palms, touch-sensitive mimosa leaves, breathable stinkhorn lattices, mycelium materials and fairy rings.

Each one leads into a design challenge, from a dandelion-inspired drone and cactus-inspired clothing to a mycelium lamp, a smelly Devil's Fingers burglar alarm and a fairy ring city. Along the way, they meet real-world examples of biomimicry, including Velcro from burrs, the Beijing National Stadium from bird's nests, and mushroom leather and mycelium packaging as alternatives to animal hides and plastic.

Mind mapping, advertising challenges, story and poetry prompts, and a "What I Have Learned" assessment help students observe closely, think critically, communicate their ideas and see sustainability as something to design for.

Inside this resource, you'll find a free downloadable poster from the Biomimicry Treasure Hunt Blog.

Slides are prepared for digital devices, so you can add your own text boxes and instructions.

Perfect for a full STEAM unit or for picking individual activities, in Grades 1 to 3 (and adaptable for advanced Kindergarten or Grade 4). It supports NGSS connections to structure and function, adaptations and engineering design, and it works well for differentiated stations, a "Nature's Innovations" bulletin board or a class museum of student inventions.

Think Dive is built on a simple idea: a handful of curiosity + a bucket of imagination = learning that sticks. Every resource is designed to spark original thinking in young minds.

“I took my students for hike in the woods near our school. We look at he fungi that we found and then read about it when we got back to school. They were very excited and learned a lot from the reading passage. Thank you for your work and for turning my students on to what is around them!”
