Description

Design a Green Moon City: Where Space Exploration Meets Environmental Innovation!

What if we could build a city on the Moon — and do it right from the very beginning? This imaginative STEAM project invites students to think like engineers, environmentalists, and future space explorers as they design a Green Moon Base complete with a Recycling Station.

Students start by exploring what it actually takes to survive on the Moon — no air, extreme temperatures from -233°C at night to 123°C in the day, radiation, and space rocks raining down. They research lunar resources like ice water and regolith sand, discover how solar panels could be built from Moon dust, debate the pros and cons of recycling in space, and grapple with fascinating questions: What do we do with space junk? Can we grow food hydroponically on the Moon? What green jobs would exist in a lunar settlement?

Then comes the best part — they design their own Green Moon Base and Recycling Station, thinking carefully about sustainability, reuse, and building something that works with the lunar environment rather than against it. Printable Moon Base templates and astronaut figures are included so students can build and colour their own 3D model.

This 35-page no-prep print resource includes a Moon Base Green Challenge brief, an All About the Moon facts and research page, a Space Words vocabulary page, a Moon Exploration research page, a "What If" imagination drawing page, a recycling comparison page (Earth vs Moon), an opinion writing page, two Design a Settlement mind maps (needs and resources), a Water on the Moon ideas page, two Solar Power research pages, two How to Build a Moon Base research pages, a waste materials brainstorm page, a dangers on the Moon mind map, a food and food waste page, a Space Junk page, a Moon Green Jobs mind map, a recycling station design page, printable Moon Base and astronaut cut-out sheets, and labelling/signage templates.

Aligned to NGSS 3-5-ETS1 Engineering Design standards.

Perfect for primary science, STEAM, and environmental education — this project sparks deep thinking, creative problem-solving, and real excitement about the future.
