Teach students about Eugene Bullard with this intermediate French reading comprehension activity. This nonfiction biography follows his journey from the United States to WWI in France and his later service during WWII. The 90-minute resource includes printable and Google Slides versions, questions in English and French, an answer key, and extension resources.
Eugene Bullard overcame extraordinary obstacles to become a hero in France. From humble beginnings in the United States, he made his way to Europe and learned to fly. He served as a combat pilot during World War I, survived serious injuries, and later served France again during World War II. Recognition in his native country came only after his death.

Choose the English questions when students need additional language support, or use the French questions for a more immersive interpretive-reading task.
For novice-high and intermediate-low learners, read the article together, clarify unfamiliar language, and discuss each section. More advanced students can complete the reading independently.
Extend the lesson by asking students to discuss Eugene Bullard’s experiences, write a biographical summary, compare how France and the United States treated him, or research another historical figure. These extensions can connect interpretive reading with interpersonal discussion and presentational writing.
For AP French classes, use the article to practice reading nonfiction, identifying supporting details, summarizing information, and discussing cultural and historical perspectives.

My students were familiar with Claude Monet's work but didn't know much about his life, so this was useful info not in our textbook. I appreciated having the differentiated versions.

Great way to use history to review reflexive verbs while not just focusing on daily routine - which let's be honest, is boring. Who talks about their daily routine on a regular basis? No one.

For Les Animaux Reading Comprehension: 10 A2 French Animal Passages
I left this as a packet for level 2 students in addition to other work when I was out for a few days due to surgery. I offered a few bonus points if they selected 2-3 readings to keep them busy when everything else was turned in. They loved learning about animals and many students who didn't have time while I was out chose to complete the entire packet on their own time for fun once I was back.
