French digital escape games can be a fun way to practice the language and learn about the history and culture of the French-speaking world. Learn about the holiday of l'Armistice/Le Jour du Souvenir in this digital game for French learners.
November 11 marks the anniversary of the Armistice ending the fighting in World War 1 and is known as Le Jour du Souvenir. This digital escape game teaches students about the events of that day as well as how we remember those who sacrificed so much. Topics include:
What's included:
The game includes two different version: one that is entirely in English, and one that has the clues in English (since it can be difficult for non-native speakers to catch the nuances in the clues) but the sites and videos where they will find the answers are in French. Students will know that they have the correct code to unlock each lock as the form will tell them if they are correct or incorrect. They can show you that they've solved the puzzles by taking a screenshot of the final screen.
The teacher guide includes instructions on how to reach the site, directions on how to play the game, and the answer key for the French and English games just in case you get stuck. There are two different websites where the game is hosted - one in Google sites, the other hosted on digitalescapegames.com. Please check on your school network before you assign the game to your students, as some networks do block access to sites hosted outside of your district's network.

“This should have been fun but my students are more apt to give up if they can't solve something right away or can't find the answer directly in a text. I think we needed more time and I should have explained better how to do the puzzles. I learned quickly and started by walking them through the clue for the date lock.”

This was such a terrific purchase. It was a bit challenging, but my students loved this digital escape. It was interesting and they learned a great deal.

This was a good activity, but very difficult for some of my students. The English version was confusing in that on one of the clues two words had to be combined for the answer and one of the clues answers was in French instead of English. There was also a clue with numbers and letters.

This was a fun and educational way to reinforce ideas behind the day, thank you!

My students had a really hard time with it and they weren't overly engaged. One of the questions was impossible to get right.

I am sorry to hear that they had a hard time with it. It is geared more towards high schoolers so that may have contributed. If you don't mind letting me know which question was impossible to answer, I will take a look at it and see if I can make it more clear.

It was a really cool idea but finding the links to click on was even hard for me as a teacher. I would love it if directions were a bit clearer.

While this was as challenging as the others, perhaps because my students were more familiar with this topic to start with, it did not frustrate them to the same degree as the others, and they were able to figure more out w/o help or hints. The one clue that was still super frustrating was the date one. How were we to be able to determine the year in question? Perhaps the year this resource was written but I didn't know that w/o looking up the answers first. Could you perhaps modify the resource to somehow include that clue somewhere/somehow? Merci.

Students were engaged and I used it to commemorate the Armistice. They competed to finish first. It reinforced the lesson

My students really enjoyed this game! It was extremely challenging, but they were so satisfied when they solved the clues. It really encouraged them to read closely. I did have to give them a few hints. I only used the English version because even that took a long time for them to solve. I did feed them the clue to the date lock because in 2020, I figured it would be pretty impossible to lead them to the date from 2019. This was the first escape room activity I've done and I will be doing more!
