Preterite or imperfect? Help students choose the appropriate Spanish past tense with 30 English sentences in this self-grading digital practice game. Students decide which tense they would use to express each sentence in Spanish; they do not write conjugated verb forms. Correct choices move them forward, while incorrect choices send them back to repeat that section. Includes Google Drive, PowerPoint, and PDF versions for individual practice or whole-class use.
Practice choosing the tense
Give students practice deciding whether a sentence calls for the imperfect or preterite.
Each of the 30 questions presents a sentence in English. Students select the Spanish tense they would use to express it, allowing them to focus on tense choice without also having to produce a conjugated verb.
Students do not need to have mastered the verb forms before using this activity.
How the game works
The response-based progression lets students know whether their choice was correct as they work through the game.
What’s included
Individual or whole-class practice
Share the game as an individual assignment or work through it together on a smartboard.
For whole-class use, you can ask students to explain their choice before selecting an answer. This is a suggested teaching approach rather than an additional included activity.
A focused addition to your past-tense lessons
Use this resource alongside your Spanish imperfect practice and preterite lessons to focus specifically on choosing between the two tenses.
This is a tense-selection game, not an exercise in writing conjugations or translating complete sentences into Spanish.

Such a cute idea! I noticed a small mistake (still had some French on the Spanish), but it was a quick, easy remedy. I really appreciate you sharing this :)

I love this activity! I had my students use it repetitively, until they rolled their eyes at me when I said, "Una vez más!" It was a great warm up activity while I took attendance and chatted to my Zoombies one-on-one.
