Description

Help students understand the language of math word problems instead of relying on keyword tricks.

Understanding Math Words: Problem-Solving Vocabulary explicitly teaches students how mathematical language describes quantities, relationships, conditions, representations and reasoning.

Rather than teaching rules such as “altogether means add” or “each means multiply,” students learn to ask:

What do I know? What is unknown? Which information matters? How are the quantities related? How can I represent the problem? Why does my strategy make sense?

This approach helps learners develop stronger word-problem comprehension and more flexible mathematical reasoning.

Students work with important problem-solving concepts including problem, question, known, unknown, relevant information, irrelevant information, condition, relationship, representation, strategy, solve, solution, explain, justify, check and more.

The resource deliberately shows that the same word can occur in different mathematical structures. For example, each may describe multiplication when the total is unknown or division when the amount in each group is unknown.

What is included

This resource includes:

  • explicit problem-solving vocabulary teaching pages

  • problem vs question

  • known, given and unknown information

  • relevant vs irrelevant information

  • mathematical relationships

  • equations and representations

  • bar models / tape diagrams

  • number lines, tables and diagrams

  • strategy and method vocabulary

  • solve vs solution

  • explaining and justifying reasoning

  • checking whether an answer makes sense

  • word-problem comprehension practice

  • matching and identification activities

  • multi-step problem solving

  • error analysis

  • mixed problem-solving review

  • reference pages

  • a full problem-solving vocabulary challenge

  • full worked solutions, not just final answers

  • UK English edition

  • US English edition

75 pages per edition

The download contains two parallel 75-page editions:

UK Edition: UK spelling and terminology

US Edition: US spelling and terminology

The mathematical content is equivalent across the two editions; these are localised versions rather than 150 different activities.

Why this resource is different

Many word-problem resources teach students to hunt for a keyword and immediately choose an operation.

This resource teaches something more useful:

language gives clues, but the mathematical relationship determines the strategy.

Students learn to identify what is known and unknown, decide which information is relevant, recognise the mathematical structure, choose or create an appropriate representation, solve carefully and justify why the method works. That is the core teaching approach used throughout the resource.

Skills practised

Students will practise how to:

  • understand what a question is asking

  • identify known and unknown information

  • distinguish relevant from irrelevant details

  • recognise part-whole, comparison, change and equal-group relationships

  • interpret mathematical vocabulary in context

  • represent problems using equations, models and diagrams

  • choose an appropriate strategy

  • solve one-step and multi-step problems

  • explain mathematical thinking

  • justify a method or answer

  • identify and correct faulty reasoning

  • check whether an answer is reasonable

  • communicate answers clearly in context

The final challenge brings vocabulary, representation, multi-step calculation, relevance, justification and checking together in one extended problem.

Ideal for

Grades 3–5

Also useful for:

  • math intervention

  • word-problem support

  • homeschool

  • small-group instruction

  • independent practice

  • math language development

  • review

  • test-preparation support

  • advanced Grade 2 learners

  • Grade 6 learners needing additional problem-solving language support

Printing information

This resource is supplied in A4 format. Both the UK and US editions retain the A4 layout. US customers printing on US Letter can use their printer's Fit / Fit to printable area setting where required.
