This complete unit is designed to compliment and is aligned to the recent unit rolled out by NSW Education Department 2025. It is based on the unit of work

Unit 4 HSIE STAGE 2

Duration: 8 weeks + 2 weeks optional consolidation

This unit teaches students to examine the age of global navigation and the diverse journeys that shaped European and regional knowledge of Terra Australis. They compare early navigators’ motivations, exploring how trade, exploration, and curiosity drove key voyages, and investigate how these journeys connected Terra Australis to the wider world.

Syllabus outcomes

• HS2-ACH-01 describes Aboriginal Peoples’ obligations to Country, Culture and Community
• HS2-HIS-01 explains how people lived in the past, how navigation connected the world, and what life was like in the Sydney Cove penal settlement, using sources as evidence

It is important at the start of each lesson that you read the teaching notes as there is some Lesson preparation needed for some lessons. These include printing sets of cards in some lessons, printing worksheets for assessment purposes so that work samples are available for each child.
