Description

Looking for a hi-lo reading passage for older struggling readers that keeps the text accessible without lowering the level of thinking? Bat People on the Moon: A Newspaper Hoax That Fooled Readers explores the 1835 Great Moon Hoax and connects it to modern questions about the moon landing, giving students an unusual way to think about evidence, belief, and credibility.

This resource goes beyond a passage and comprehension questions. Students work with compare-and-contrast text structure, evidence-based responses, scaffolded writing, vocabulary and morphology, and an optional video connection. Teachers can use the core reading as a short lesson or extend it into a deeper multi-source lesson about what makes information seem believable or suspicious.

What's Included

  • Hi-lo informational passage with vocabulary support

  • Text-dependent reading comprehension questions

  • Two levels of scaffolded evidence-based writing support

  • Compare & Contrast graphic organizer

  • Optional Watch & Connect video activity

  • Morphology and vocabulary extensions

  • Discussion, writing, and text-structure activities

  • Teacher guide with flexible lesson pathways

The extension activities are built directly from the passage, so students can strengthen comprehension while also working with morphology, word meaning, compare-and-contrast language, evidence, and critical thinking. Students can even extend the lesson by creating their own fictional hoax and considering what details would make it sound convincing.

The optional Watch & Connect activity adds a second source about Apollo 11 moon landing conspiracy theories. Students compare reasons some people thought the landing was fake with the real explanations, then connect those ideas back to the Great Moon Hoax and consider how details influence what people believe.

Use it for reading intervention, special education reading support, small-group instruction, or independent practice. Students do not need to complete every activity. Choose the pieces that fit your instructional goal and your students’ needs.
