Teach A Doll's House with a complete, coordinated unit that helps students understand what is happening in the play before asking them to make larger claims about character, power, marriage, identity, and Ibsen's dramatic choices.
The unit begins with a spoiler-light ethics pre-reading activity and a context lesson on Henrik Ibsen, realism, the well-made play, problem plays, marriage and gender expectations, and the social position Nora occupies at the beginning of the play. From there, students move through Acts I–III with reading guides, alternate-form reading checks, and post-reading discussion lessons. After Act III, the unit returns to the whole play through character development, stagecraft, the title, the “wonderful thing,” and the feminist/humanist question before students complete a cumulative assessment.
This unit was built for AP Literature, honors, and upper-level secondary ELA classes. It gives students real support with plot, chronology, relationships, and dramatic structure without doing the interpretation for them.
