Description

Your students have written the college essay.

Now comes the part that is often harder to teach: real revision.

This three-lesson workshop is designed for students who already have a complete or nearly complete personal statement. Instead of focusing only on proofreading, students look closely at what the essay actually reveals, what can be cut, and whether the final version still sounds like them.

Students revise their own existing drafts throughout the workshop.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

• 3 instructional PowerPoints

• 12 student-facing revision pages

• 3 teacher guides

• 100-point college essay rubric

• teacher conference sheet

• quick-start and pacing guide

REVISION 1: COULD ANYONE ELSE HAVE WRITTEN THIS?

Students look for sentences that could easily belong in someone else's essay.

They learn that making writing more specific does not mean piling on adjectives or random sensory details. Instead, they revise details, choices, observations, and reflection so the person behind the essay becomes easier to see.

REVISION 2: THE 650-WORD CUT

Students learn to cut what the essay does not need without cutting out the parts that give it personality.

They look first for:

• unnecessary setup

• repeated ideas

• wordy phrasing

• background that takes up more space than it earns

Students also identify lines worth keeping before they begin cutting, so shorter does not automatically become better.

REVISION 3: THE FINAL READ

Students stop fixing individual sentences and read the essay as a complete piece.

They check:

• What does the reader actually learn about me?

• Does the language still sound like me?

• Does my reflection fit what happens in the essay?

• Does the prompt fit without taking over?

• Did revision make anything sound less like me?

• Have I handled the final sentence-level edits?

Students also use one focused outside reader without turning the essay into something written by committee.

AI AND REVISION

This is not an AI-detection lesson.

Students are asked to notice whether outside editing - human or tool-assisted - made the writing clearer or simply made it sound less like them. Polished writing is not treated as proof of AI use.

TIMING

Each lesson is designed for approximately one 40-minute class period, with about 35 minutes of usable instructional time.

Use the workshop as:

• a three-day college essay revision sequence

• the final step after your own personal statement assignment

• a revision resource for senior English

• a counselor-led college essay workshop

• a conference and self-editing sequence before submission
