Personal Literary Analysis Through Self-Discovery: Make yourself a "Character"
$10.00
Turn Halloween into an atmospheric estate auction where students bid on mysterious objects—then discover exactly what they brought home.
The Cursed Object Auction is a one-class-period Halloween ELA experience for grades 9–12. Students work in teams with $600 in fictional money, inspect six estate-catalog lots, decide whether to bid or pass, and discover each object’s provenance only after bidding closes. Once the curses emerge, teams have to live with their purchases, reconsider the risks they took, and decide what to keep, destroy, sell, or give away.
This activity is intentionally lighter than a traditional literary-analysis lesson. It works well for Halloween, a Gothic literature unit, AP Literature, creative-thinking days, or any class period when you want students discussing, inferring, and making choices without assigning another heavy worksheet. No outside text is required.

HOW IT WORKS
1. Teams begin with $600 in fictional money.
2. Each lot appears with only its estate-catalog description.
3. Teams confer, then place a private bid in $25 increments—or pass.
4. Bids are revealed together and the highest bidder owns the object.
5. After bidding closes, the object’s hidden history is revealed.
6. At the end of the auction, teams decide what to do with their purchases and discuss which object would be hardest to leave alone.
LOW-PREP OPTION
Project the teacher deck and print only two pages per team: the Team Auction Ledger and Final Disposition sheet. The additional catalog and provenance cards are optional if you want to make the experience more tactile.
