Description

Ten voices have arrived. None will tell your students its name.

Literary Séance is a one-period Halloween ELA mystery that asks students to identify classic literary characters from a sequence of staged “manifestations” — then write one final message in character and challenge classmates to identify the speaker.

No prior reading of the ten featured works is required. Students begin with a cold first impression, then uncover a concise Spirit Directory and use later clues to test, revise, and finally lock their identification.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Teams receive one pre-folded Spirit File while the Spirit Directory stays covered.

2. Manifestation I gives only a broad motive, contradiction, or desire. Students record an initial theory or suspect.

3. The directory opens for Manifestation II. Teams test their first impression, revise, and update confidence.

4. Manifestation III narrows the evidence before teams lock their final identification.

5. After the reveal, each team writes a 45–65 word “Message from Beyond” using a concrete clue, a regret/warning/desire, and believable character voice — without naming the character or work.

6. The class hears selected messages and makes one evidence-based guess for each speaker.

An optional Banquo bonus adds one final uninvited spirit if time remains.
