Description

Teach all nine chapters of The Great Gatsby with one coordinated post-reading unit. Includes 9 instructional decks, 9 student packets, 18 A/B reading quizzes, 9 teacher guides, an interactive whole-novel review, and a cumulative assessment with two 50-question forms. All materials are included in editable PPTX and print-ready PDF formats.

A complete chapter-by-chapter teaching unit for The Great Gatsby, designed for students who have already read each assigned chapter before class.

This unit includes instructional lessons, student packets, alternate-form reading quizzes, teacher guides, a whole-novel review game, and a cumulative assessment for all nine chapters of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel.

The chapter lessons are built for post-reading review and analysis rather than first-reading instruction. Students get the support they need to make sense of plot, character relationships, chronology, and important details before moving into deeper discussion of Fitzgerald’s patterns, symbols, characterization, narration, class, time, carelessness, and the American Dream.

The goal is not to make students discover every important observation on their own. The materials point them toward details and patterns they may not notice independently, while leaving the interpretation and discussion to them.

What the Chapter Lessons Emphasize

The chapter materials move beyond simple plot recall, but they do not assume students can analyze a difficult novel before they are sure what actually happened.

Across the unit, students work with ideas such as Gatsby’s self-invention, Daisy and the world she represents, Nick’s changing judgment of Gatsby, inherited status versus new wealth, cars and carelessness, time and the desire to repeat the past, East and West, the green light, the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg, weather and seasonal imagery, and the development and collapse of Gatsby’s dream.

The lessons also make connections across chapters so that recurring details do not disappear once students turn the page.

Designed for Real Class Periods

Most chapter lessons are designed for about a 40-minute class period.

The instructional deck supports discussion, while the student packet gives students a place to record the important thinking. Teacher guides include pacing, suggested responses, discussion notes, and reminders about places where students may need additional help with literal comprehension.

The reading quizzes are intentionally quick to grade and include Form A and Form B for easier classroom management.

A Note About the Quizzes

Each chapter includes two comparable quiz forms.

The quizzes focus on the events, relationships, recurring details, and brief significance students should understand after reading. They provide straightforward reading accountability without turning every question into literary analysis.

Forms A and B are designed to be comparable in difficulty.

The Whole-Novel Review

After Chapter 9, students can review the entire novel through an interactive team game organized around:

People & Motives • Money & Belonging • Symbols & Patterns • Turning Points • Nick’s Verdict

Questions move from factual recall into whole-novel connections, and the final challenge asks students to use evidence from both early and late in the novel.

The PowerPoint version also tracks previously selected questions by changing the color of used point values.

The Cumulative Assessment

The final assessment can be used as a full multi-period exam or adapted to fit your schedule.

The complete version includes:

50 multiple-choice points + 20 short-answer points + 30 extended-response points = 100 points

You can also use the multiple-choice section alone, pair it with one writing section, or select the response options that best fit your class.

Form A and Form B assess the same content with different question order and answer placement.

File Formats

Every classroom component is provided in:

PPTX — editable in Microsoft PowerPoint

PDF — stable, print-ready version

Student materials use a light, photocopy-friendly design. Instructional materials use a coordinated cream, teal, and gold Art Deco-inspired visual system.

Important Before You Purchase

Students should have access to and read The Great Gatsby separately.

The text of the novel is not included.

This resource is designed as a post-reading chapter unit, not as a substitute for reading the novel.

PowerPoint is recommended for the editable files and for full functionality of the interactive whole-novel review game.

Best Fit

This unit works especially well for secondary ELA classes studying The Great Gatsby as a full-class novel, including general high school English, honors English, and classes in which students benefit from clear comprehension support before moving into literary analysis.
