Bill of Rights Writing Activity
Looking for a way to increase literary skills and classroom discussion in your U.S Government or Civics course? Trying to increase engagement in your high school Criminal Justice & Police Science? Searching for meaningful supplementals for American History students? Look no further than this resource! Students are encouraged to work in pairs and think critically as they analyze, discuss, and re-write different amendments as if they were being ratified today. How would the language differ? Would there be more included? Less? What’s missing or irrelevant? All these questions and more will emerge in your classroom as students not only have to show their understanding of the Bill of Rights, but also how it is interpreted today and what may need to be updated based on current language and terminology. This is sure to engage students and foster conversations around understanding the first 10 constitutional amendments. Lastly, students choose between a reflect and a predict response at the end, providing more opportunities for students voice and choice within an activity.
This resource works great as a classwork assignment, sub plan or Centers/Stations Activity. Pair it with our constitutional amendment maze or exit tickets to support continued learning!

“My 6th Grade students struggled at first, but we ended up using this in conjunction with a Ted-Ed video, which was perfect for their level. This was a great activity for Celebrate Freedom Week! The only thing I would change is that I would add the 2nd and 9th amendments and have them all in order. The activity was quick and easy for my 8th Graders, and they loved it!”
