Social Media & Freedom of Speech Digital Citizenship for Middle & High School

Teach about digital literacy in a relevant, engaging way!
This lesson engages students in a digital citizenship activity related to social media and freedom of speech.
Students will...
- Complete a KWL chart
- Consider their ideal social media platform
- Watch a video (linked in resource) about social media & the first amendment
- ...and ultimately design a "licensing process" for using social media.
Our "License to Post" activity is perfect for Digital Literacy Week and is great for any class! We recommend it for Government and Civics, as it ties into freedom of speech, but it could be used in any context to review media literacy skills and healthy social media use.
This lesson allows for a lot of creative freedom, both on the part of teachers and students! Our suggested lesson delivery is included on the first page of the PDF, but we encourage you to use the resources in any way you choose.

Teacher reviews
“My students really enjoyed creating a "test" for being able to post on social media. This was a great follow up to some of the SEL learning we had already begun and really made the ideas we talked about concerning digital footprint and responsible posting into something tangible.”
“My students loved this! It was organized well and easy to follow.”

For Calculating Hourly Wages and Overtime Pay Pixel Art
October 15, 2026While I absolutely enjoy this resource, I had some initial difficulty getting my students to actually be able to work on it individually. First, it is online only through google slides; so, I made a copy as instructed. However, the mistake I made was sharing that copy with all of my students. When they accessed it, they were all editing the same copy. I had to make a copy for each of my students and share it with them individually. Second, I had to give each student editor permission (I only missed this step twice). That being said I do love the resource as it self-checks, enabling students to get a 100% and complete the picture. I plan to us it again.

Hi Velma, thank you for letting us know you liked this resource. Typically, once you create your own copy, we recommend sharing that through your schools Learning Management system and then there is typically a spot to click that creates individual copies for students. Hopefully that can streamline that process for you for future use!

For Daily Career-Based Math Bell Ringers: Engaging 9-12th Grade Warm-Ups
September 15, 2026I absolutely love this resource! I use it daily as bellwork for my high school Algebra and Financial Algebra Special Education classes. It answers the age old question- "When will we ever use math in real life?" I've been teaching for 15 years and this may be one of my favorite finds ever!
