Chemistry Review for Senior Biology Courses - This lesson package includes the lesson (student and teacher versions of the PowerPoint), and a student lesson handout as a Word document. The PowerPoint is meant to review the basic chemistry concepts that will be needed in a senior-level biology course.
In order, the lesson covers:
- Atoms
- Valence Electrons
- Isotopes
- Ions
- Lewis Dot Diagrams
- Intra and Intermolecular forces
- London, Dipole-Dipole and Hydrogen Bonds
- Ionic and Covalent Bonds
- Electronegativity
- The unique properties of Water
Buyer Comment: "I love all of your PowerPoint presentations. Thanks so much! :)"
Please view the Preview File to obtain a sense of my style, see how my power point lesson is structured and evaluate my work.
Included in the lesson package is:
- The teacher version of the PowerPoint
- The student version of the PowerPoint
- Student lesson handout
The student version of the power point contains multiple blanks that need to be filled in throughout the lesson. These blanks are conveniently underlined and bolded on the teacher copy. I have found this to be the most effective means of keeping my students engaged and active without having them write everything out. This also leaves more time for discussion and activities.
NGSS:
HS-PS1-1 Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
HS-PS1-3 Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.
HS-PS1-8 Develop models to illustrate the changes in the composition of the nucleus of the atom and the energy released during the processes of fission, fusion, and radioactive decay.
Specifically, the content reviewed in the PowerPoint focuses on key chemistry concepts that provide foundation for senior biology, including:
Learning these topics helps students develop models to describe atomic/nuclear structure and bonding forces (HS-PS1-1, HS-PS1-3). It also lays groundwork for understanding radioactive processes (HS-PS1-8) covered at a deeper level in biology.
Overall, this assessment resource helps ensure students have prerequisite knowledge of chemistry fundamentals necessary for success in subsequent biology studies, as aligned within the performance expectations of the NGSS standards listed.
