In this project, your students will explore how cacao trees depend on healthy ecosystems and how human activities affect the future of chocolate. Students will investigate where cacao trees grow, the environmental conditions they need to survive, and how deforestation and climate change threaten cacao-producing regions around the world.
It covers NGSS standard MS-LS2-4 (Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics – effects of changes to ecosystems).
Students will demonstrate their understanding by creating a poster, infographic, presentation, PSA, persuasive letter, action plan, or gallery walk exhibit that explains the science behind chocolate production and ecosystem health.
Students will then communicate their findings and explain how human choices—such as land use, farming practices, and consumer decisions—impact cacao trees and the ecosystems they depend on.
Chocolate Ecology Project Highlights
✅ Real-World Science Connection: Students investigate a familiar, high-interest topic (chocolate) to understand ecosystems, biodiversity, and human impact.
✅ Choice-Based Project Formats: Multiple creative output options support differentiation and student voice.
✅ Cause-and-Effect Focus: Emphasizes how deforestation and climate change affect cacao trees and rainforest systems.
✅ Science Communication: Students explain scientific ideas using evidence through writing, visuals, or presentations.

Why Choose This Resource?
This project offers an engaging, hands-on way for middle school students to deepen their understanding of ecosystems and human impact using a topic they care about. It promotes inquiry, creativity, and critical thinking while reinforcing core life and Earth science concepts through reading, research, and evidence-based explanations.
The project is fully adaptable for different classroom settings, includes a clear structure, student exemplars, and a universal rubric, and supports real-world connections by showing how everyday choices affect environmental systems.
Students build both scientific understanding and communication skills while working on a meaningful, standards-based project.
