Description

These three matter and chemical change data graphing activities will help your students understand how energy affects phase changes, how reaction rates change under different conditions, and how density relates to mass, volume, and temperature while building strong graphing and data analysis skills. This bundle gives teachers an easy, NO PREP way to have students work with real-world style chemistry datasets to explore Phase Changes, Reaction Rates, and Density & Properties of Matter.

There are 3 Graphing Labs Included:

  • Phase Changes (Heating & Cooling Curves) Investigation
  • Reaction Rates Investigation
  • Density & Properties of Matter Investigation

Students analyze real-world style chemistry datasets related to heating and cooling curves, energy transfer during phase changes, reaction rate changes, temperature and concentration effects, density relationships, and material properties. They then create a variety of graph types from data tables before using their graphs to identify patterns, analyze trends, and explain how matter behaves at the particle level. Each activity includes a complete answer key with the required graphs if you need to differentiate for different ability levels.

Each activity includes a complete answer key with the required graphs if you need to differentiate for different ability levels.

How It Works

Students use provided real-world data tables to:

  • Create multiple types of graphs (line graphs, bar graphs, and scatter plots)
  • Identify patterns in phase changes, reaction rates, and density relationships
  • Compare how variables such as temperature and concentration affect reaction speed
  • Analyze how energy impacts changes in state
  • Explore how mass and volume relate to density
  • Use evidence from graphs to answer discussion questions about matter and chemical change

Each activity moves students from reading data → graphing data → interpreting patterns → explaining scientific processes.

Topics Students Explore

  • Heating and cooling curves
  • Phase changes (melting, boiling, freezing, condensation)
  • Energy transfer during changes of state
  • Reaction rates over time
  • Effects of temperature on reaction speed
  • Effects of concentration on reaction rate
  • Particle motion and collision theory
  • Density calculations (mass vs volume)
  • Floating and sinking
  • Temperature effects on density
  • Identifying substances using density
  • Real-world applications of matter and chemical change

This graphing bundle is also included inside my Middle School Science Graphing & Data Analysis Mega Bundle at a significant discount. The bundle contains graphing activities for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science topics.
