Description

Under the eerie glow of a full moon, strange creatures are stirring in the lab—each one a mix of mysterious genes and spooky surprises! It’s up to your students to uncover the secrets of monster heredity by predicting, combining, and sketching their own genetically engineered beasts.

In this interactive and creative heredity lab, students “breed” their own monsters using Punnett squares to predict traits like green skin, horns, fangs, and tails.

Perfect for introducing dominant and recessive alleles, genotype vs. phenotype, and probability — with a fun, creative spin that students love.

Students determine genotypes, complete Punnett squares, calculate ratios, and then design a monster offspring that matches their predicted traits. A dihybrid challenge is available for faster-moving learners and an answer key and examples are included.

What Students Do

  • Identify genotype and phenotype relationships for monster traits
  • Use Punnett squares to predict inheritance patterns
  • Analyze dominant vs. recessive alleles through modeled crosses
  • Calculate genotypic and phenotypic ratios
  • Create and label an illustrated monster offspring
  • Complete an optional dihybrid cross challenge (AaBb × AaBb)

What You Get

  • Teacher Guide: Setup, timing, and materials; background on genes, alleles, and inheritance; safety and extension ideas
  • Trait Cards: Six colorful monster traits (skin, horns, eyes, fangs, tail, fur color)
  • Student Packet: Guided Punnett squares (mono- & dihybrid), analysis questions, and drawing template
  • Answer Key and Exemplars: Completed examples and a filled 4×4 dihybrid square (9:3:3:1 ratio) as well as exemplar submissions.
  • Introductory Reading: “From Genes to Traits” comprehension article + answer key to get your students.

Skills & Standards

  • Genetics fundamentals (genotype/phenotype, dominance, probability)
  • Develop and use a model to describe why offspring vary in appearance
  • Data analysis, modeling, and scientific reasoning

Why Teachers Love It

  • No prep, no mess — just print, cut, and go!
  • Combines genetics, math, and art
  • Built-in differentiation with monohybrid and dihybrid options
  • Engages all learners through creativity and science
