Description

Students will create a newsletter about our solar system through guided research. Allow your students to learn through inquiry with this guided research-based, hands-on assignment. They will study our solar system and the celestial bodies that make it up. The activity is in word and allows for full customization. Your students will gain research as well as design and creativity skills by performing this assignment. Also, this assignment encourages your students to use their own devices in class.

Lesson 4 - The Seasons and Earth's Tilt

Lesson 5 - The Moon

Lesson 6 - Eclipse - Solar and Lunar

Lesson 7 - Galaxies, Other Objects and the Universe

Lesson 8 - The Immensity of the Universe

NGSS Included:

MS-ESS1-2 - Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system.

MS-ESS1-3 - Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system.

Specifically, this assignment asks students to research various celestial objects in our solar system and gather data on their size, composition, etc. This addresses aspects of MS-ESS1-3 in having students analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties.

Describing motions and orbits of planets/moons as influenced by gravity aligns with modeling core ideas outlined in MS-ESS1-2 as well.

Overall, through this inquiry-based assignment where students develop informative newsletters on different components of our solar system, it provides opportunities to demonstrate understanding of key concepts presented in these two NGSS middle school Earth and space science performance expectations.
